Stomach or gastric cancer is a disease in which cancer cells form in the lining of the stomach. The wall of the stomach is made up of three layers of tissue: the mucosal layer, the muscularis layer, and the serosal layer.The tissue type of stomach cancer is determined with a microscope. Risk of disease

Infections are known to increase the risk of stomach cancer. Other risk factors include obesity, smoking, carcinogen-rich diet and advanced age.

  • Presence of H. Pylori: These stomach-dwelling bacteria can be with antibiotics. While not everyone who develops stomach cancer has H. Pylori bacteria, those who do may be at increased risk.
  • Gender: Men are more likely than women to develop stomach cancer.
  • Having Heliobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection of the stomach
  • Having chronic gastritis, pernicious anemia, intestinal metaplasia, or familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP)
  • Being male.
  • Being older or male.
  • Smoking cigarettes.
  • Having a mother, father, sister, or brother who has had stomach cancer.
  • A diet high in salty and smoked foods
  • A diet low in fruits and vegetables
  • Family history of stomach cancer

Cancer Risk

The risk factors for stomach cancer include:

  • Age: over 50
  • Gender: twice as common in men
  • Geography: Japan, Korea, parts of Eastern Europe, and Latin America experience higher rates
  • People with multiple relatives with some type of cancer
  • People who have been diagnosed colon polyps or colon cancer or another gastrointestinal cancer at an early age

Helicobacter pylori is a bacterium that is usually found in humans. Typically, these bacteria do not cause illness; they are found in two thirds of the world’s population.

SIGNS & SYMPTOMS

  • Yellowing of the eyes and skin, also called jaundice
  • Buildup of fluid in the abdomen, also called ascites
  • Blood in the stool
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Weight loss for no known reason
  • Stomach pain
  • Feeling full after a large meal, which is more likely if the cancer is blocking the region where the stomach empties into the intestines
  • Pain, which may suggest peptic ulcer
  • Loss of weight or strength due to not getting enough nutrients
